If you are looking for an opportunity to speak French or African Languages and immerse yourself in new cultures, then studying abroad in the Democratic Republic of the Congo may be for you.
The Capital City Kinshasa is on the banks the Congo river, the second largest river in the world in terms of drainage area. The cultural, economic and social differences with the western nations make studying in the Congo very intellectually and culturally stimulating.
There are students who are motivated by an interest in international relations, development, social sciences, scientific academic programs or simply a desire to discover the African environment and experience the extraordinary.
The program is designed for students who are independent and self-reliant, but they have the support of the university in order to adapt to the environment. Professor Osokonda Okenge, Anthropologist and Dean, is available throughout the year to provide academic and general program assistance.
Academic Program
Students have the choice of several academic courses, including those that emphasizes languages and culture:
1. African Anthropology/Socio-Cultural Studies (3 credits)
2. African Philosophy (3 credits)
3. African Languages: Lingala or Swahili (3 credits)
4. Independent Study:Volunteering, Research (3 Credits)
5. Intensive French Conversation and Grammar (3 credits)
6. French Language and Literature (3 credits)
Students typically take three courses plus the independent study for which they earn a total of 12 credits per semester. Other courses are available throughout academic departments.
Most courses are taught in French, however there may be courses taught in English. Students are at liberty to write their assignments tests in English.
Program Dates
Fall Semester Programs generally begin mid-November. Intensive French Language session from October 1 to mid-November. Special cases may be considered on request.
Housing
Students who wish to make their own housing arrangements must inform our office well in advance. Lodging will normally be prearranged by the University in the city center. Downtown Kinshasa is known for its cafes, music, and ambiance. Meals may be cooked in apartments or obtained at inexpensive restaurants.
Program Fees
Fall Semester: $8,900
Full-Year: $13,900
The program fees covers Tuition, Orientation, Housing and Basic Support Services.
Not included in the program fee are: meals, books and personal expenses; students should plan spending more or less $250 per month for these expenses.
